Photo: Menafn. Qatar’s Shura Council Speaker signs MoU with the UN to open counter-terrorism office in Doha
On February 17, 2020, the State of Qatar, represented by the Shura Council, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations on two-folds: to provide a framework for cooperation to enhance the role of parliaments in countering terrorism and the conditions related to this phenomenon, and to facilitate cooperation between the two sides in areas of mutual interest. The MoU was signed by Speaker of the Shura Council Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud and Under-Secretary-General of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism Vladimir Voronkov.
Following the MoU signed at the UN headquarters in New York, the two sides are going to establish the Office of the UN Counter-Terrorism Program, which encourages and garners parliaments to participate in preventing and combating terrorism. The office will be placed in Doha, State of Qatar, and will be in charge of all the nation’s parliamentary actions regarding terrorism.
Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud, the Speaker of the Shura Council, mentioned the importance of parliaments in actively combating terrorism using any means in their hands, such as legislative measures, policy setups, budget allocations, government action monitoring, and ensuring the implementation of international pledges related to terrorism. The office will be supporting world parliaments to be trained to better understand and respond to any issues related to terrorism. It also expects an easier approach from the UN and Inter-Parliamentary Union on implementing necessary strategies and resolutions in dealing with terrorism.
