On May 15, OSCE PA held a webinar under the theme “COVID’s Impact on Conflicts in the OSCE Region.” Parliamentarians gathered to discuss the obstacles the pandemic poses in resolving regional conflicts whiling stressing governments to work towards a free and peaceful OSCE region. Friday’s meeting was moderated by OSCE PA Deputy Secretary General Gustavo Pallares.

In the webinar, nearly 50 parliamentarians from some 30 countries participated. Keynote speakers included Ambassador Tuula Yrjölä, Director of the OSCE Conflict Prevention Centre, and Ambassador Ya?ar Halit Çevik, Head of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine. It also featured remarks by the Chair, Vice-Chair, and Rapporteur of the OSCE PA General Committee on Political Affairs and Security – Richard Hudson (United States), Costel Neculai Dunava (Romania), and Laurynas Kasciunas (Lithuania).

During the discussion, limits to the works of international institutions for conflict resolution and humanitarian aid exist, due to travel restrictions, border closures and other social instruments adopted by respective governments against the pandemic. Dunava stressed that parliamentarians should ensure that OSCE peace missions and measures remain fully operational despite COVID-19’s global impacts.
