On January 16, 2020, Mikhail Mishustin has become the new Prime Minister of Russian Federation, replacing Dimitri Medvedev after his resignation. He was nominated by President Vladimir Putin on January 15, and the vote for his approval by the State Duma, the lower house of the parliament, took place the day after.

In the vote, the State Duma unanimously approved Mishustin as the new prime minister. A total of 383 MPs out of 424 voted for Mishustin and 41 abstained. The Prime Minister Dimitri Medvedev served as president from 2008 to 2012, and was Prime Minister since 2012, until his resignation on January 15.

Mishustin was not widely known to the public until Putin’s nomination, but he is well known as one of the country’s most effective technocrats. He was previously the head of Russia’s Federal Tax Service from 2010, during which he helped modernize Russia’s outdated tax system. As a result of his effort to digitize and centralize the taxation system, the tax revenue has increased substantially. From 2011 to 2018, he was a member of the President’s Council for Financial Market Development.

Mishustin is expected to utilize his expertise and experience from his former position to deliver economic progress and better the lives of Russian citizens, who have been suffering from Russia’s economic downturn. His new cabinet will be formed by Tuesday. Meanwhile, Medvedev will now be the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council.
