On February 14, 2019, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wentian, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister, and Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn signed the cooperation agreement on the projects of Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Special Fund 2018.

China agreed to provide 7.66 million U.S. dollars from the LMC Special Fund 2018 to Cambodia for implementing 19 projects in the country.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Wang said Cambodia had harvested the largest number of LMC Special Fund projects for two consecutive years – 16 projects for 2017 and 19 projects for 2018. These projects cover a broad scope of cooperation activities in the field of agriculture, tourism, ICT, education and research, water resources, rural development, air connectivity, cultural and religious exchanges.

Wang also said that China always stands ready to work with Cambodia and other LMC countries to implement LMC Special Fund projects, to plan future cooperation with a new horizon, and to build the LMC Economic Development Belt collectively.

The Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn commented that the signing ceremony was undoubtedly a piece of concrete evidence that the LMC is moving from strength to strength, saying that although these projects are small, their impact is significant.

China initiated the LMC Special Fund during the first LMC Leaders’ meeting in March 2016 with the aim of supporting the small- and medium-sized cooperation projects put forward by the six Lancang-Mekong countries. These six Lancang-Mekong countries include China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
