On July 25, Pakistan’s 2018 general election was held to elect the members of provincial assembly and national assembly following end of the 5-year term of the former assembly.

Imran Khan, 65, the head of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), or Pakistan Movement for Justice party was elected the prime minister.

According to the data released by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the voter turnout was 51.7 percent. The voters elected members of the Pakistani National Assembly, which consists of 272 seats including the representatives of four provinces Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and two territories FATA, and Islamabad capital. Additionally, 10 seats for minorities and 60 for women will be elected based 5 percent proportional representation of the 272 general seats.

Out of 272 general seats in the National Assembly, PTI won 16.86 million votes and 116 seats.

The newly-elected Prime Minister Khan is an Oxford graduate and a former cricket player who led Pakistan to Cricket World Cup victory in 1992, who later won his first election to parliament in 2002. As a chief of PTI, Khan will serve as Pakistan’s prime minister.

Though PTI won the election, the party is short of 21 parliamentary seats for an assembly majority and to form a government. The remaining 43 parliamentary seats were taken by Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPP), 64 seats by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and 47 seats by others. PTI would soon announce coalition to form a government.

Also noteworthy are eight women out of 171 contestants and a Hindu NA member, Mahesh Kumar Malani, 55, who were newly elected in 2018 General Election.

Once ECP issues the verified official list of the elected candidates, the president will convene the National Assembly session for oath-taking. The entire process will likely be completed by August 10, and the newly-elected Prime Minister Khan is expected take oath on August 11.
