SUBJECT Asad Qaiser, Qasim Suri elected as Speaker, Deputy Speaker of Pakistan National Assembly

Asad Qaiser of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) party has been elected as the speaker of the new National Assembly, which is the lower house of the bicameral Majlis-e-Shura composed of the President and the Senate of Pakistan.

 

In a secret ballot casted in the National Assembly, Asad Qaiser secured 176 votes out of a total of 330 votes. The opposition nominee Syed Khurshid Shah of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) won 146 votes while eight votes were rejected.

 

After the voting procedure, Asad Qaiser sworn in as the 21st Speaker for the National Assembly and presided over the session.

 

“We will work in collaboration and take positive measures for the country with consultation from all parties,” said Qaiser as quoted in Dailytimes, who also promised to direct the parliament to work with honesty.

The newly elect speaker Qaiser was born on November 15, 1968 in Marghuz located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Swabi district.

 

He received education from Government Higher Secondary School Marghuz, then from Government Postgraduate College Swabi.

 

Previously, Qaiser was elected the 14th speaker of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly in 2013.

 

Pakistan elected a new Deputy Speaker of National Assembly as well.

 

Qasim Khan Suri, also a candidate of PTI, has been elected with 183 votes.

 

His opponent Maulana Asad Mehmood of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) gained 144 votes.

 

The newly-elected deputy speaker addressed the lack of basic infrastructure facilities in the province of Balochistan, to which he belongs. He vowed to bring peace back to the people of Balochistan.
