On December 6th, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Moon Hee-sang received Vietnamese parliamentary delegation led by Speaker of the National Assembly of Vietnam Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.
The two speakers agreed to continue the friendship and cooperation between the two parliaments. Such parliamentary relations will contribute in promoting strategic partnership for the people of the two countries.
Speaker Moon said that Vietnam is the fourth biggest trade partner of Korea. In pursuant with President Moon’s New Southern Policy to enhance relations with ASEAN, Vietnam is highly valued as an important partner in trade, investment and official development assistance. Speaker Moon added that the Republic of Korea is the biggest investor of Vietnam, and also the second largest trade partner of Vietnam.
As Korea and Vietnam agreed last March, the two countries look forward to meeting the trade goal of $100 billion by 2020. Speaker Moon asked Speaker Ngan to pay close attention and support Korean businesses operating in Vietnam for achieving the goal.
Speaker Moon also asked Speaker Ngan to enhance people-to-people exchange and protection of the two countries’ citizens.
In response, the Vietnamese speaker praised the ROK President Moon Jae-in’s visit to the country last March as an important factor in the development of bilateral relations.
Speaker Ngan suggested means to maintain bilateral cooperation mechanisms such as the joint committee on cooperation in nuclear power, energy, industry at the ministerial level, as well as intergovernmental committees on economic, scientific, technological cooperation. She stressed that Vietnam values official development assistance of the ROK and expressed hope that Korea will continue to support in fields such as transport infrastructure, transportation technology, urban development, high-quality training of human resources.
