June 30 is International Day of Parliamentarism and the anniversary of the foundation of the IPU.
131 years ago on June 30, 1889, Inter-Parliamentary Union was founded by a number of parliamentarians as the first political multilateral organization in the world to encourage cooperation and dialogue among various nations.
For the past year, IPU and its members have celebrated the 130th anniversary under the slogan “130 years of empowering parliamentarians.” IPU considers this day to be a meaningful opportunity for IPU and its Member Parliaments to spread the message that “to put in the place the legislation and the budgets to respond to the health and economic crisis, to protect vulnerable people, to scrutinize government action and to help build back better after the COVID-19 pandemic,” parliamentarism is more crucial than ever.
