Marking the 76 years since the liberation of Auschwitz, the European Parliament commemorated International Holocaust Remembrance Day with a virtual ceremony on January 27.

The ceremony started with the opening remark from David Sassoli, EP President. Sassoli mentioned that the hatred against Jews led to the creation of concentration camp and gas chambers, which targeted to build a hierarchy of human races of which the bottom lied the Jews. He highlighted that Europe should remain connected between Member States and preserve a space of democracy, while acting together and protecting Europe’s cohesion.

Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, President of the Conference of European Rabbis, and Gyula Sarkosi, representative of the Roma community, reminded us that descendants of Holocaust survivors remain in Europe and that Europe should evolve towards better future for European humanity, defending European culture and liberty.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp, was liberated on 27 January 1945. In 2005, the United Nations designated 27 January as an International memorial day, to commemorate the victims who have lost their lives, friends and family and atrocity that survivors experienced under the Nazi regime.
