On this day in 1955, the Vietnam War begins. Officially a conflict between North Vietnam and the South Vietnamese government, backed by the USSR and the U.S., respectively, the war ends on April 30, 1975 with the fall of Saigon. Victory of the North leads to reunification of Vietnam into the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
